Gosport Schools Sports Partnership

The Governments’ long term vision is to increase the amount and quality of PE and Sport in schools and colleges. The PE and Sport Strategy for Young People (PESSYP) in the run up to 2012 is part of the Olympic legacy. The aim is for every child to have access to 5 hours of high quality PE and Sport per week (3 hours for 16-19 year olds).

Our target
To create a new ‘5 hour offer’ for all 5-16 year olds. To continue to increase the number of 5-16 year olds taking part in at least 2 hours high quality PE and Sport at school each week and create opportunities for them to participate in a further 3 hours each week of sporting activity, through school, voluntary and community providers; and Create new opportunities for all 16-19 year olds to participate in 3 hours each week of sporting activities through their colleges or in local clubs.
The PE and Sport Strategy expectations are for 40% of 5-19 year olds to take part in 5 hours of PE and Sport per week by 2010-2011.

The Partnership focuses its work around the 10 National strands of the PE and Sport Strategy for Young People:

  • Infrastructure
  • Coaching
  • Professional Development
  • Extending Activities
  • Clubs
  • Competition
  • Gifted & Talented
  • Leadership & Volunteering
  • Swimming
  • Disability

Our current position
The current offer of PE and Sport for young people is around 35,000 hours per week for Gosport. This equates to a 4 hour offer for all young people currently within the Gosport area. Currently 79% of young people 5-16 years can access 2 hours of high quality PE and sport within the curriculum, up from 75% last year.
In terms of 3 hours plus of PE and Sport per week, 53% of young people in the Gosport area are participating. The national target for young people accessing 3 hours of PE and sport for 2009-2010 should be 50%, although we are surpassing this current target there is still a long way to go in developing a coherent 5 hour offer that is accessible to all young people in our community.

The team at the Gosport SSP are committed to ensuring that all young people in Gosport have the best opportunities and provision possible. With key partners and organisations we are striving to gurantee this happens and the implement a fully accessible 5 hour offer to all...
